Evan Chambers

I was born and raised in Los Angeles.  My parents were both artists and art instructors and being in their creative environments when I was young helped direct me into what I do today.  It also gave me a philosophy of making that understands the importance of balance between art and craft.

I began blowing glass and working with copper at age eighteen at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  At that time, Cal Poly had an excellent metalsmithing program run by Clarissa Hewitt and a very creative glass program run by George Jercich.  While earning a degree in English Literature, I pursued both of these mediums and took as many classes in them as I could.

During the summers I was fortunate to  apprentice under a man named Sonny Cresswell on his 100 acre property in northern California.  I knew other artists who had learned from him and one day I got up the nerve to call and ask If I could come up and learn too.  While there, he taught me studio equipment building as well as how to make art nouveau glass.  I spent over 10 years learning from him whenever I could.  It was a highly formative time. He passed in 2011 and I still think of him almost daily.

After graduating from Cal Poly I purchased a portion of a glass studio with various other glass artists in Atascadero, CA.  During this time I was fortunate to work with and learn from glass artists Andy Paiko, Elaine Hyde and Ken Peterson.

In 2009 I moved back to Los Angeles to build a new glass and metal studio.  This is where I have produced the majority of my work.  Both my metalwork and glasswork have been refined in this space.  I feel fortunate to have been able to pursue these two materials simultaneously for so long.

I have shown my work at the Smithsonian Craft Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and many other places.
